Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz (R,C-Oyster Bay) recently spearheaded a campaign to amend the state’s laws concerning squatters’ rights. Blumencranz introduced his proposal, A.6894, during a press conference where he emphasized the need to safeguard homeowners' rights and redefine squatting as criminal trespassing. He highlighted the urgency of the issue by referencing recent incidents, such as the tragic death of a woman in Manhattan at the hands of squatters.

Blumencranz's proposed legislation aims to extend the period required for squatters to gain homeowner rights from 30 to 45 days and grant police the authority to arrest trespassers. In his own words, Blumencranz stated, “The fact that someone can break into your house and have full legal protection after 30 days is completely wrong and un-American." He further explained, "This is why I’ve proposed the Property Protection Act to close these glaring loopholes in the law and directly combat the squatting crisis we are facing in our state."

The Assemblyman stressed the importance of providing homeowners with enhanced protection against the threat of losing their property to squatters. He also emphasized the necessity of empowering law enforcement officers to take action against violators. Blumencranz asserted, “Long Islanders and all New Yorkers should not have to live in fear of people trying to game the system and take away their hard-earned property and their American dream."

Blumencranz concluded by underlining the significance of prompt action to safeguard New Yorkers and their residences, stating, "New York is the home of hard-working individuals and families, not criminals looking to cheat their way to the top. We must act now to protect New Yorkers and their homes."
