New York State is once again in the midst of its budget season, and Nassau County's public safety-net hospital finds itself without financial support. The proposed state budget of $252 billion, an increase of $8.6 billion from the previous year, does not allocate any funds to Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC). This marks a continuation of a trend where the hospital has seen its state aid reduced from $180 million in 2017 to zero by 2024.

Governor Kathy Hochul's latest budget proposal mirrors the actions of her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo, by excluding NUMC from receiving state support. This exclusion comes despite NUMC's role as a critical healthcare provider for hundreds of thousands annually. The lack of funding persists even though patients, providers, and the community are entitled to these funds under existing legal frameworks.

NUMC CEO Megan Ryan has addressed this issue in detail in her column for the Massapequa Herald Post.
