Senate Republicans in New York have introduced new legislation aimed at providing tax relief to residents. The proposed bills, S.587 and S.3914, focus on eliminating state income taxes on cash tips and overtime pay respectively. This initiative is part of the Senate Republicans' broader "Liberate New York" agenda, which seeks to address the state's affordability crisis.
Senator Steve Rhoads emphasized the need for such measures, stating, “Hardworking New Yorkers are being taxed to the brink while Albany keeps spending like there’s no limit. Enough is enough. Eliminating state income taxes on overtime pay and cash tips is a simple, common-sense way to let workers keep more of what they earn."
Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt echoed these sentiments, highlighting the financial struggles faced by many residents due to rising costs. He remarked, “At a time when so many New Yorkers are struggling with rising costs on everything from groceries to utility bills, it’s imperative we do anything we can to make sure they are able to keep more of their hard-earned money in their own pockets."
Senator Jack Martins also voiced support for the legislation, urging its inclusion in this year's state budget. He stated, “It is time to prioritize relief for hardworking New Yorkers who are struggling to keep up as New York becomes more and more unaffordable."
The bills align with efforts at the federal level to eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, aiming to provide additional financial relief for New Yorkers.
