The New York State Senate Republicans have voiced strong opposition to the idea of reinstating the MTA payroll tax as a measure to address budget shortfalls for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). They argue that businesses in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) cannot handle another financial burden. The tax, which impacts businesses with employees in areas including New York City's five boroughs and several suburban counties, is seen as an impediment to hiring.
Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick from the 9th Senate District emphasized that "the MTA’s long history of fiscal mismanagement is in need of real reform." She stated, "We must continue to hold the MTA accountable and ensure that taxpayers and businesses are not forced to foot the bill for its ongoing failures."
The Republicans are urging Governor Hochul and Democrat Leadership to avoid using this tax increase as a solution. Instead, they call for accountability within the MTA and stress finding long-term solutions that promote fiscal responsibility. Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick added that it would be "simply unacceptable and irresponsible" for the state to address fiscal issues through increased taxes rather than focusing on efficiency.
A letter has been sent to Governor Hochul and Democratic leaders in both the Senate and Assembly outlining these concerns.
