Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, alongside Senate Republican Leader Robert Ortt and Senator Pam Helming, introduced a comprehensive legislative package aimed at enhancing homeownership incentives, improving access to affordable housing, and safeguarding property owners against squatters. The unveiling of this package by the Senate Republican Conference signifies a proactive approach to address housing concerns in communities.
The proposed legislation encompasses various measures such as tax credits, removal of regulatory impediments, encouragement of new construction, and enhancements to existing housing infrastructure. Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of squatters, stating, "There have been several high profile, disturbing reports regarding squatters recently... My legislation would make it clear that squatters and those who occupy property without permission from the owner are not treated as tenants and have no right to remain on the property."
Among the key proposals included in the legislative package are the establishment of criminal trespass for squatting, creation of tax credits for first-time homebuyers and home renovations, introduction of a housing infrastructure tax credit, and means-testing for rent-regulated housing. These initiatives aim to stimulate housing development, support property owners, and ensure affordable housing options for New Yorkers.
Additionally, the package features measures to expedite the eviction process for squatters, extend tax incentives for developers, and establish a Local Housing Task Force to facilitate collaboration between stakeholders in the housing sector.
By unveiling this legislative package, Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick and the Senate Republican Conference demonstrate a commitment to addressing housing challenges, promoting homeownership, and protecting property rights in the state of New York.
