Yesterday, Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, Assemblyman Ari Brown, former Congressman Anthony D’Esposito, and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, alongside other local Nassau County officials, expressed their strong opposition to the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project and the proposed lithium-ion battery storage facilities in residential areas.

“This isn’t just about a wind farm or a storage site—it’s about who gets to decide what happens in our communities,” stated Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick. She emphasized the importance of maintaining local control over projects and criticized Equinor for its lack of engagement and response to public concerns. She described President Trump’s announcement as a step forward in their efforts to protect residents and environmental safety.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has directed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to halt the Empire Wind construction due to rushed approvals by the Biden Administration. Assemblyman Ari Brown declared it a victory for Long Island, asserting that the efforts of local, state, and federal leaders have successfully pushed back against the offshore wind projects.

“For more than three years, I’ve sounded the alarm on Empire Wind One - a reckless gamble that threatened our environment, our economy, and our coastal way of life,” stated former Congressman Anthony D’Esposito, considering the halt a victory for common sense and local livelihoods.

Nassau County Legislator Pat Mullaney attributed the project's cancellation to persistent community pressure and demands for transparency. He emphasized the importance of resisting top-down mandates and protecting local communities.

Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick reinforced her support for cleaner energy, but not at the expense of safety, transparency, or local control. She expressed gratitude to President Trump, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, and Secretary Burgum for their role in the decision. She also thanked local officials and residents for their advocacy, acknowledging their impact in safeguarding the shoreline.

The decision follows extensive public opposition focused on potential environmental risks, economic impact, and lack of local consultation. Concerns have been raised over the effects of the turbines on marine life, migratory birds, and the fishing industry, along with the danger posed by lithium-ion storage facilities near homes and schools.
