Albany, NY - Members of the Senate Republican Conference have voiced strong opposition to Governor Hochul's lawsuit against the federal government's decision to halt congestion pricing. The Republicans describe the lawsuit as frivolous and criticize it as a wasteful use of taxpayer money.

The conference is promoting legislation, S.533, which aims to repeal congestion pricing and conduct an independent audit of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). They argue that this approach would ensure efficient spending without imposing additional financial burdens on New Yorkers.

Senator Steven Rhoads expressed his disapproval, stating: “New Yorkers are tired of being Albany’s endless ATM. The Governor’s decision to squander taxpayer dollars defending a failed congestion pricing scheme is both reckless and out of touch.” He further criticized the Governor for proposing an $8 billion spending increase while introducing a new $1 billion congestion tax.

Senator Jack Martins also condemned congestion pricing, calling it "a gimmick and a farce." He suggested that the MTA should focus on enforcing its fares instead of implementing new taxes. "We don’t need this tax; we need competent and accountable leadership," he stated.

Senator Bill Weber commented on Governor Hochul's response to the Trump administration's action against congestion pricing: "What the MTA actually needs is a full, top-to-bottom audit of its finances." He criticized the Governor for pursuing legal action rather than expressing gratitude for halting what he termed economically reckless policy.

Senator Steve Chan questioned the logic behind raising funds through congestion pricing when traffic levels are reportedly low. He urged for solutions that do not burden taxpayers further.

Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick reiterated her opposition to congestion pricing, emphasizing transparency and leadership that prioritizes everyday New Yorkers' concerns over political gamesmanship.

The Senate Republican Conference has pledged support for federal efforts aimed at alleviating financial pressures on New Yorkers and countering what they perceive as an out-of-touch agenda from Albany.
