Today, Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick voted against the Senate's one-house budget resolution. The Senator criticized the budget for continuing what she describes as an unsustainable reliance on taxpayers. Governor Hochul’s $252 billion budget proposal, introduced in January, already represented a significant increase of $8.6 billion over the previous year's spending. The Senate Majority's plan suggests raising state spending further by $15.5 billion compared to last year, resulting in a total budget of $258.9 billion. This marks a substantial rise of $90 billion since 2019.
Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick expressed concerns about the proposed tax hikes and spending increases, labeling them as reckless and fiscally irresponsible amidst the financial hardships faced by New Yorkers. She argues that the budget fails to address New York's high cost of living, which she attributes to excessive government spending.
"Our focus should be on making New York more affordable, investing in public safety, and ensuring that the state’s resources are being used efficiently – not to expand government and increase the everyday costs for struggling families," stated Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick.
She emphasized her commitment to advocating for a budget that prioritizes her constituents' needs, holds the government accountable, reduces wasteful spending, and makes New York more affordable. "I won’t support a budget that puts government spending ahead of the financial stability of the taxpayers in our communities," she concluded.
