Corinn Kennedy, a Registered Dental Hygienist at Babylon Dental Care, advises maintaining optimal oral health through proper brushing techniques, selecting an appropriate toothbrush, incorporating mouthwash, and avoiding habits that could harm teeth.

"Key oral hygiene tips are to brush correctly, select the right toothbrush, use mouthwash, and avoid damaging techniques," said Kennedy.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for overall health. It helps prevent dental issues like cavities and gum disease and broader health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. The ADA emphasizes that consistent brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups are crucial components of a healthy oral care regimen. However, many people overlook some lesser-known but highly effective techniques that can enhance oral health.

Kennedy recommends specific techniques that can significantly impact maintaining oral health. She suggests using the modified bass technique, which involves angling the brush bristles at a 45-degree angle toward the gumline and using short, circular strokes. "The type of toothbrush you use certainly matters," she said. Kennedy recommends ADA-compliant electric toothbrushes, such as Oral-B or Sonicare, for their effectiveness in reducing bacteria when used correctly.

In addition to brushing and flossing, the ADA notes that mouthwash can play an important role in a comprehensive oral hygiene routine. The association recommends using mouthwash with fluoride to reduce plaque, prevent cavities, and contribute to a cleaner mouth. They mention that using mouthwash twice daily after brushing can provide optimal benefits; however, it is essential to avoid rinsing with water immediately after use to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Kennedy also points out several common practices to avoid for healthier teeth and gums. She cautions against brushing too roughly or with hard bristles as this can damage gums and lead to receding gumlines. Furthermore, she advises avoiding very acidic beverages like citrus drinks because they can weaken enamel and increase the risk of tooth decay. "Chewing on hard objects like bottle caps and ice can also lead to fractures in teeth," she said.

According to the Babylon Dental Care website, Kennedy's career in the dental field began as a dental assistant. After dedicating five years to this role, she pursued and earned a degree in Dental Hygiene from Farmingdale College. The website notes that her calling to become a dental hygienist is rooted in her belief that fostering healthy smiles plays a significant role in uplifting her patients and helping them feel good about themselves.
