Patricia Harrs, a resident of Levittown and Hicksville, has led an exemplary life dedicated to public safety, volunteerism, and family. Her commitment to service began at the tender age of 17 when she worked as a lifeguard. This early experience underscored the importance of vigilance during crises, a lesson that would prove invaluable in her subsequent roles.
Harrs carried these skills into her role as a Nassau County Police Department Crossing Guard, where she diligently protected children from harm. Her respect for life deepened further when she joined the Nassau County Corrections as an officer. After serving for 32 years, she retired as Captain of the Police Academy. During her tenure, Harrs instilled values such as reverence for life, crisis vigilance, and a readiness to serve and protect in young cadets over approximately 15 years.
Despite her fulfilling professional life, Harrs also led a rich personal life. She married her childhood sweetheart at 18 and had four children by the age of 24. However, tragedy struck when she lost her husband four years later. Despite this loss, Harrs remained steadfast in providing a stable home for her children through her dedication to service. Today, all members of her family lead successful lives and Harrs is the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren aged between 13 and 29.
In 2020, Harrs was compelled to retire due to a cancer diagnosis but has since recovered and is now enjoying retirement. Throughout her years of service, she was affectionately known as the “mother hen” of the jail due to her nurturing nature. She continues to be the binding force in her family, ensuring love and respect are maintained through all circumstances.
For her community service efforts, resilience in face of adversity and warm-heartedness we are honored to present Patricia Harrs with the Woman of Distinction award!
