WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Anthony D’Esposito (NY-04) announced Monday, June 5, 2023, that he is calling for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to be impeached from office.  The retired NYPD Detective cited the breakdown of law and order along the border as well as the impact of the ongoing migrant crisis on New York communities – including the recent decision to house migrants at JFK Airport – as reasons for the call to impeach Mayorkas.

“Secretary Mayorkas has failed at his job of protecting America’s borders and he is clearly incapable of leading the Department of Homeland Security,” said D’Esposito.  “Mayorkas’s inability to safeguard our borders has allowed an untold number of illegal migrants to evade capture, and America’s national security to be threatened.”

During his announcement, D’Esposito noted that the migrant crisis has had a particularly negative impact on New York State.  Recently, thousands of migrants have been transported to New York City, which has long billed itself as a “sanctuary city” – a position D’Esposito also opposes.  Due to the lack of planning by the Department of Homeland Security, busloads of migrants who crossed the southern border have also been sent to unprepared suburban communities surrounding New York City as the Big Apple has found itself overwhelmed by the sheer number of recent border crossers.  Indeed, the overwhelming flood of migrants in New York has even spurred the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to successfully petition the Federal Aviation Administration for use of warehouse space at John F. Kennedy Airport to House migrants – a request that was met with dismay by D’Esposito.

“States and municipalities are now being forced to solve Secretary Mayorkas’s migrant crisis due to the lack of leadership coming from the Department of Homeland Security,” said D’Esposito.  “There has been no thorough plan laid out by Secretary Mayorkas on what to do with these migrants, and now in the absence of Mayorkas’s leadership it seems we have government agencies taking radical steps to deal with this crisis, including the misguided decision to house migrants in a warehouse at JFK Airport in New York City.  Not only do I feel this plan raises serious security questions for one of America’s largest airports, but it frankly seems inhumane.”

In addition to the millions of migrants who have been apprehended by Department of Homeland Security personnel and released into communities, it has been reported that over 530,000 migrants have illegally entered the country and evaded capture since October 2022, as per May 2023 estimates by US Customs and Border Protection.

“Not only has Secretary Mayorkas abandoned migrants who have been processed by the Department of Homeland Security, but under his watch, hundreds of thousands of migrants have successfully evaded capture when crossing the border and their whereabouts as well as their intentions remain unknown.  For this dereliction of duty, Secretary Mayorkas must resign now or face impeachment.”
