Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, representing the 9th District, along with her Long Island colleagues, has introduced a bill in response to a horrific dismemberment crime that shook the community of Babylon. The incident, which garnered national attention, involved the discovery of body parts in a recreational park and various other locations within the neighborhood.

In light of this gruesome crime, Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick expressed her determination to address the flaws in the current bail laws of New York. She emphasized the importance of empowering judges and district attorneys to ensure the safety of communities by preventing the release of suspects back into society. The Senator stated, "Enough is enough. When our dedicated law enforcement does their job to locate and arrest individuals suspected of depraved acts such as what we saw in Babylon, we owe it to New Yorkers to empower our judges and district attorneys with laws to keep our communities safe, rather than forcing them to release those suspects back into the community. I will continue to work with my colleagues to correct the state’s disastrous criminal law policies to keep our communities safe.”

The proposed legislation aims to address the specific crime of body dismemberment and concealment of a human corpse by making it a bail eligible class E felony. This measure seeks to provide a legal framework to prevent similar heinous acts in the future and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
