Matthew J. DeGregorio, a veteran of the United States Air Force and the Vietnam War, has dedicated his life to serving both his country and community. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Levittown, New York, DeGregorio attended local schools before enlisting in the Air Force. He trained as an Aircraft Maintenance and Crew Chief, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant while serving with the 602nd Fighter Squadron (Commando) in Vietnam and Thailand.
Throughout his military career, DeGregorio received several honors including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal for his service and valor.
After completing his military service honorably, DeGregorio returned to Levittown where he became a strong advocate for veterans. As Post Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Levittown–Island Trees Post 9592, he has been active in supporting veterans, military families, and the local community.
Under DeGregorio’s leadership, the VFW Post organizes hospital visits for ailing veterans, sends care packages to deployed troops, assists local military families, and mentors youth. The Post also actively participates in community events such as parades and flag retirement ceremonies.
DeGregorio has worked to make the VFW a welcoming place for all veterans regardless of gender or age. His commitment is evident through his advocacy efforts with local, state, and national representatives to improve policies affecting veterans’ lives. He also promotes engagement among middle and high school students through VFW’s youth scholarship programs.
Beyond his work with veterans, DeGregorio is a devoted husband to Maryanne and father to three daughters. He is also a grandfather to five grandchildren. His dedication reflects the values celebrated by the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame.
