John Mackey, born in Roosevelt, New York, on September 24, 1941, passed away on July 6, 2011, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a prominent NFL tight end, playing nine seasons with the Baltimore Colts and one with the San Diego Chargers. Mackey recorded 331 receptions for 5,236 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time All-Pro. In Super Bowl V, he scored a notable 75-yard touchdown. Beyond his playing career, he served as the first president of the NFL Players Association post-merger, leading efforts to improve player benefits and challenging restrictive policies. His contributions led to significant changes in the league’s labor relations. Mackey’s legacy endures in both his athletic achievements and his advocacy for players’ rights.
