In response to a recent $259 billion budget proposal from the Senate Majority, Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, alongside the Senate Minority Conference, has proposed the addition of several legislative measures to address New York's affordability crisis. These measures form part of the Senate Republican Conference's "Liberate New York," 2025 Legislative Agenda, designed to support families and businesses burdened by high taxes and rising costs on essentials like utilities and housing.
Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick stressed the urgent need for relief from escalating costs, emphasizing the effects of expanding governmental expenditures on the public: "New Yorkers are being crushed by rising costs—from utility bills to groceries—while Albany’s bloated government spending only worsens the affordability crisis. Families struggling under the weight of high taxes and expenses need relief, not reckless spending."
The proposed agenda seeks to alleviate the financial pressure through practical solutions such as tax reductions and first-time homebuyer credits, aiming to make housing more accessible. Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, highlighting her personal experience, stated, "As a mother of four, I know firsthand the importance of budgeting—if my household expenses exceed our budget, I can’t simply decide to spend more. Yet, under one-party control, Albany has done just that, and we’re all paying the price."
The senator's appeal focuses on long-term fertility in the state, expressing concern over potential demographic declines due to high living expenses: "I want my kids, my neighbors' kids, and every New Yorker’s children to have the opportunity to build their futures here. But the reality is, unless we get serious about bringing costs down, New York will continue to lose residents, leaving fewer people to shoulder an ever-growing tax burden. It’s time for lawmakers to say enough is enough and prioritize real fiscal responsibility."
The Senate Minority aims to redirect the budget towards strategies that promote economic balance and personal financial security for New Yorkers.
