On the first day of the 2025 legislative session, Senate Republicans from the Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island demanded the resignation or removal of Janno Lieber as Chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). This call follows Lieber's comments dismissing concerns about subway crime as being "in people's heads."

Senator Steve Rhoads criticized Lieber's leadership, stating that "our commuters don’t have a perception problem. We have a deception problem." He emphasized that MTA management has neglected issues of crime and safety on subway platforms. Rhoads urged Governor Hochul to remove Lieber if he does not step down voluntarily.

Deputy Senate Republican Leader Lanza expressed similar sentiments, urging Lieber to "walk a mile in your riders’ shoes" before dismissing their concerns. Lanza highlighted incidents of violence on public transit and called for truthful communication and real solutions.

Senator Jack M. Martins pointed out that current laws should be enforced to prevent fare evasion and suggested responsible spending by the MTA. He criticized congestion pricing and additional taxes as burdensome for New Yorkers.

Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick described Lieber's comments as "a slap in the face" to transit users, calling for his resignation due to his lack of empathy.

Senator Steve Chan noted public opposition to congestion pricing and argued for new leadership at the MTA to address these issues.

Criticism continued with Senator Bill Weber questioning the impact of congestion pricing on everyday people, including working parents and seniors.

Senator Rob Rolison condemned Lieber’s remarks as insulting to NYPD officers who manage subway safety daily. He called for more government action on public transportation safety.

According to Senator Anthony Palumbo, fiscal mismanagement at the MTA has led to increased fares amid dangerous conditions. He urged prioritizing safety and affordability in 2025.

Senator Dean Murray advocated for appointing a financial control board due to mismanagement under Lieber's leadership, citing significant financial losses at the MTA.

Finally, Senator Alexis Weik accused Lieber of celebrating congestion pricing while ignoring fare evasion issues. She also called for a Financial Review Board to address ongoing mismanagement at the agency.
