ALBANY, NY – On March 26, Senator Steve Rhoads, Senate Republican Leader Robert Ortt, along with Senator Pam Helming, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Housing, Construction, and Community Development, and members of the Senate Republican Conference, today unveiled a comprehensive package of legislation designed to prioritize housing in New York State.
Leader Rob Ortt emphasized the importance of addressing housing affordability, stating, "Housing affordability is one of the biggest issues facing our state... The legislative package we are putting forward today... will deliver affordable homeownership for the state of New York."
Senator Steve Rhoads criticized the current situation, highlighting the need for action, "While Albany Democrats continue to talk about a self-inflicted housing crisis... I was proud to stand with my Senate Republican conference to advance an actual plan to do something about it."
Senator Pam Helming echoed the sentiment, pointing out the unattainability of the American Dream for many New Yorkers and emphasizing the importance of solutions that increase access to affordable housing options.
Other senators also voiced their concerns and proposed solutions, including Senator Jack Martins calling for an end to the misuse of rent subsidized housing, Senator Anthony Palumbo advocating for the extension of successful housing programs, and Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick pushing for legislation to address the issue of squatters.
Senator Mario Mattera highlighted the need to protect homeowners from squatting, stating, "The aggressive legislation I have introduced will protect homeowners by providing them with a mechanism to quickly remove squatters... This will give power back to our residents who are being repeatedly abused by the current broken system."
The legislative package includes various proposals such as tax credits for first-time homebuyers, incentives for home renovation, and measures to address squatting issues. The senators are urging for the advancement of their housing agenda to create a brighter and more affordable future for all New Yorkers.
