The individual responsible for Laken Riley's death had been arrested and released by local police in New York City before federal authorities could intervene, underscoring the critical role of effective collaboration between local and federal authorities.

Furthermore, Mikulin pointed out the potential consequences of New York's policies regarding individuals who are in the country illegally, suggesting a link between these policies and Laken Riley's tragic fate. Mikulin stated, "New York’s policy to protect individuals who are here illegally cannot be ignored as it arguably led to Laken’s murder."
