In a recent statement, Mikulin highlighted the importance of strengthening the relationship between New York law enforcement agencies and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to enhance public safety.
Mikulin emphasized the need for protection of American citizens, as evidenced by the tragic case of Laken Riley, stating, "American citizens need to be protected so families like Laken Riley do not lose a loved one." The individual responsible for Laken Riley's death had been arrested and released by local police in New York City before federal authorities could intervene, underscoring the critical role of effective collaboration between local and federal authorities.
Furthermore, Mikulin pointed out the potential consequences of New York's policies regarding individuals who are in the country illegally, suggesting a link between these policies and Laken Riley's tragic fate. Mikulin stated, "New York’s policy to protect individuals who are here illegally cannot be ignored as it arguably led to Laken’s murder."
To prevent similar incidents in the future and safeguard individuals like Laken, Mikulin stressed the necessity of re-establishing communication between New York's law enforcement agencies and ICE. Mikulin concluded by asserting, "Communication between New York’s law enforcement agencies and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must be re-established to prevent future crimes in order to protect individuals like Laken."
The call for a solid relationship between New York law enforcement agencies and ICE serves as a crucial step towards enhancing public safety and preventing tragedies like the one experienced by Laken Riley.
