Simon Holmstrom has given up his jersey number 10 to newly acquired veteran Brayden Schenn, who joined the New York Islanders on Friday. Schenn, who has played 1,083 NHL games, has worn number 10 throughout his career except for his NHL debut in 2009.

Holmstrom explained his decision, saying: “I love number 10. It’s a big part of starting my career and everything, but when he asked, there’s no doubt that he could have it.”

Following this change, Holmstrom will switch to wearing number 92. He becomes only the second player in Islanders history to wear that number and the first since Vladimir Malakhov.

The team announced the jersey swap on social media.
