On July 12, Senator Steve Rhoads participated in the annual Water Chestnut Pull at Mill Pond in Wantagh, New York. This event, conducted with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), aims to remove invasive species and protect local ecosystems.
Senator Rhoads, who is dedicated to preserving Long Island’s natural resources, joined his team in a kayak to extract 1,600 pounds of invasive water chestnut plants from the pond. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the health and biodiversity of freshwater habitats on Long Island.
Water chestnuts pose a significant threat as they form dense mats on water surfaces, blocking sunlight and reducing oxygen levels which harm native aquatic species. Senator Rhoads has been involved in this event for nine years, first as a County Legislator and now as a State Senator.
“Long Island’s environmental future depends on what we do today,” said Senator Rhoads. “Mill Pond is a treasured part of our community, and protecting it isn’t just a duty—it’s a personal responsibility. I’m proud to roll up my sleeves, get in the water, and take direct action to preserve the natural beauty and ecological health of the South Shore.”
He expressed gratitude towards DEC and volunteers involved in the cleanup effort, describing them as “the heart of our community’s conservation movement.”
This event aligns with Senator Rhoads’ commitment to environmental initiatives across Long Island including safeguarding waterways, combating coastal erosion, and supporting clean water infrastructure.
