The Medical Board of Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has issued a letter addressed to New York Governor Kathy Hochul and members of the state legislature, expressing strong opposition to a proposed state takeover of the hospital’s Board of Directors. The board argues that such a move would remove the hospital’s autonomy and replace its current leadership with political appointees.

The board highlighted the potential consequences of this proposal, stating that as Nassau County’s only public safety-net hospital, any reduction in size or services could put pressure on nearby facilities and potentially lead to a public health crisis. Despite facing financial difficulties, the board noted that NUMC has made significant improvements, including reducing its operating deficit by over $100 million.

“We stand in full and unwavering opposition to any plan that seeks to strip NUMC of its autonomy, replace its leadership with political appointees, or downsize its scope under the guise of sustainability,” the board stated.

The letter also emphasized the essential role NUMC plays in the community, providing care to uninsured, underinsured, and undocumented patients. The board stressed the importance of maintaining local control and making decisions with input from those familiar with the hospital’s operation.

The board expressed concern that dismantling or diminishing NUMC could lead to severe consequences for the region’s healthcare system, including overwhelmed emergency departments, increased wait times, and disrupted patient care. They warned that the changes could negatively impact various critical services and educational programs at the hospital.

“We are not standing in the way of progress – we are reaching out to be part of it. We are asking for dialogue, for transparency, for a seat at the table,” the letter continued.

While inviting collaboration and dialogue with the state, the board firmly opposed any actions that would bypass the insights and experiences of those directly involved in NUMC’s operations.

The medical board urged Governor Hochul and state legislators to consider the implications of their decisions on NUMC and essentially the many vulnerable individuals and communities it serves.

“We have now come to a defining moment – one that tests our values and principles. The impact of what is done now will reverberate for decades,” the letter concluded.

The busy Nassau University Medical Center, serving as a safety net for the region, remains committed to its mission despite the ongoing debate surrounding its future governance.
