Senators Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, Alexis Weik, Pam Helming, and Steve Rhoads have voiced their opposition to biological boys participating in girls’ sports. They were joined by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and members of the Senate Republican Conference in advocating for state-level legislation to protect women’s right to fair competition in New York.
This initiative aligns with actions taken by Nassau County Executive to ensure women have equal opportunities in athletics. Recently, the Nassau County Legislature passed a law prohibiting transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports at county-owned facilities.
Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick stated, “Biological differences affect athletic performance, and allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports creates an uneven playing field. Women’s sports were created to ensure equal opportunity in competition, and that principle is undermined when policies disregard biological differences. We have a responsibility to protect the integrity of women’s athletics and ensure the opportunities that Title IX was designed to provide.”
Earlier this year, Senate Republicans introduced the Liberate New York Agenda, which includes measures to protect girls’ sports. According to a recent Siena Poll, a significant portion of New Yorkers supports banning biological boys from participating in girls’ sports. Specifically, 46% believe all school districts should implement such bans, while only 22% support allowing transgender girls on girls’ teams.
