In Albany, New York, a bill designed to protect girls’ and women’s sports passed the Senate Education Committee with bipartisan support. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Steve Rhoads, aims to prevent the Commissioner of Education from penalizing schools that restrict female sports teams to biological females. Despite its passage in committee, Democrat leadership redirected the bill to the Senate Codes Committee, delaying further debate.
Senator Rhoads expressed disappointment at this decision: “The bill’s passage in committee is a victory for commonsense.” He criticized the move as an attempt to suppress local school district decisions and emphasized that forcing girls to compete against biological males increases injury risks and limits opportunities for scholarships and recognition.
Senator Jim Tedisco, ranking member of the Education Committee, stated: “It’s a shame that this commonsense legislation to protect women’s equality in sports was sidelined in committee.” Senator Alexis Weik added concerns about undermining parental rights and argued that allowing biological males in female sports constitutes discrimination against girls.
Other supporters include Senator Bill Weber, who highlighted personal observations of physical differences between genders, stressing the importance of maintaining protections under Title IX. Senator Dan Stec described the Democrats’ actions as “radical virtue signaling,” while Senator Steve Chan emphasized fairness and safety for female athletes.
The Republican Conference remains committed to advocating for fairness in student athletics and intends to continue pushing for legislative measures supporting girls’ and women’s sports across New York State.
