Joaquin Afonso has been recognized for his long-standing commitment to military and community service. Achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Reserve, Afonso’s journey began when he moved from Brooklyn to Mineola, New York, as an infant during World War II. Inspired by a family with a strong military background, he enlisted in the Reserve in 1964 after receiving a college deferment and completed basic training at Fort Dix.

Afonso served with distinction in the 340th Battalion’s Military Police Unit until his honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant in May 1970. He was later activated during the U.S. Postal Strike while still committed to serving the nation.

Post-military, Afonso dedicated 35 years to Nassau County as a Senior Probation Officer, retiring in 2000. In 1998, he was named New York State Probation Officer of the Year for outstanding service. His retirement marked a new phase of community involvement.

As Post Commander of Williston Park American Legion Post 144 from 2003 to 2006 and now Chairman of the Board, Afonso has been instrumental in maintaining its role within the community through various initiatives including organizing parades and blood drives.

His advocacy extends beyond the Legion as a member of the Town of North Hempstead Veterans Advisory Board. Here, he has worked on improving access to VA hospitals and organizing drives that have raised significant funds for veterans.

Afonso’s efforts are supported by his wife Barbara and their daughters Kristine and Kimberley. His dedication reflects his enduring legacy of service to family, country, and community.
