Northwell Health has announced that Glen Cove Hospital, Plainview Hospital, and Syosset Hospital have been recognized as 2025 Recognized Leaders in Caring for People Living with Diabetes by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and The Leapfrog Group. These three hospitals are the only ones in New York State to receive this recognition and are among 36 nationwide.

The designation acknowledges hospitals that prioritize the safety and well-being of patients with diabetes during their hospital stay. Hospitals are evaluated on their care for diabetic patients from admission to discharge, based on ADA’s Standards of Care in Diabetes 2025 and Leapfrog’s standards for hospital safety and quality.

To achieve this recognition, hospitals must demonstrate protocols for consistent blood glucose testing, hypoglycemia prevention, specialized surgical preparation for diabetic individuals, personalized insulin and nutrition planning, and comprehensive discharge planning for high-risk patients.

“This achievement reflects our hospitals’ mission to provide high-quality, compassionate care that addresses the unique needs of patients with diabetes. To be the only hospitals in New York State recognized this year is a tremendous honor and testament to our team’s commitment and expertise,” said Kerri Scanlon, RN, FAAN, president of Glen Cove, Plainview, and Syosset Hospitals.

Hospitals are assessed not only on these practices’ presence but also on their execution through reviews of randomly selected patient care records. “This award shows what’s possible when evidence-based practices are fully integrated into the patient care experience,” said Barbara Keber, MD, chairperson of the medical board of family medicine at Glen Cove Hospital.

Annually, about 8 million Americans with diabetes are hospitalized and face increased risks of severe complications such as amputations or comas. Poorly managed medication regimens or inadequate discharge planning can result in severe outcomes for this vulnerable group.
