The Garden City Police Department announced on April 13 the launch of Project Shield, a new initiative designed to promote student safety and well-being. The program addresses topics including social media and internet safety, cyberbullying prevention, traffic safety, drug awareness, railroad safety, bicycle safety, and school bus safety.
Project Shield aims to help students navigate both digital and physical environments safely. Officers from the department will lead interactive discussions with students about responsible online behavior and ways to prevent cyberbullying. The initiative also includes practical lessons on traffic rules, bicycle riding practices, and safe conduct around school buses.
Acting Commissioner Gerard Kneisel of the Garden City Police Department said: “It is an important program that supports both educating students and fostering an opportunity for young people to engage with Garden City Detectives and Patrol Officers.” He added: “Through Project Shield, we aim to empower students with the knowledge they need to make safe choices both online and in their daily lives.”
The police department is working in collaboration with the GCUFSD (Garden City Union Free School District) as part of this effort. Project Shield began in March with fifth grade students at Stewart School and continues in April at Stratford School.
According to the announcement, the department remains committed to creating a secure environment for all residents through community outreach programs like Project Shield.
