Garden City Assistant Chief Daniel Roeper and Village Police Officer Michael Irizarry were recognized on April 14 at the Nassau County Fire Commission’s Firematic Awards ceremony for their roles in rescuing a firefighter during a house fire in September 2025.
The awards highlight the risks first responders face and the importance of quick action during emergencies. The recognition also underscores the dedication of local departments to community safety.
According to the Village, on September 21, 2025, emergency crews responded to reports of smoke at a two-story private home. The incident was determined to be a basement fire. During operations, a firefighter searching inside encountered a collapse when part of the kitchen floor—damaged by flames from below—gave way, causing him to fall partially into the burning area as fire vented through the opening.
Assistant Chief Roeper immediately rushed to assist after seeing what happened. Officer Irizarry also moved in quickly upon observing the collapse. Together, they pulled the firefighter from danger and brought him to safety.
For their efforts, Roeper received the Class II Silver Medal while Irizarry was given a Proclamation. Mayor Ed Finneran attended with members of Garden City’s Fire Department and hundreds of other professionals from across Nassau County. “The deeds describing the instinctive actions of both Chief Roper and Officer Irizarry were extraordinary and evidenced a true calling to serving our Village selflessly. Their efforts also speak to their respective Departments’ training and devotion to our neighbors’ safety and well being,” he said.
Mayor Finneran was joined by Acting Police Commissioner Gerard Kneisel as well as members of Garden City’s Fire Department at the ceremony with honorees Roeper and Irizarry.
