On April 26, a community event was held at Wantagh High School to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Nassau County Police Department. Hosted by New York State Senator Steve Rhoads, the “Back the Blue” Ribbon Giveaway invited locals to show their support by acquiring blue ribbons to display on their homes and businesses. The initiative was to underline unity with the law enforcement officers who serve the community.
The event saw participation from several community members, who were encouraged to “Drive up. Pick up a blue ribbon. Hang it with pride.” Hundreds of yards of ribbon were handed out, with involvement from various partners including Legislator Michael Giangregorio, Assemblyman Dave McDonough, Councilman Chris Schneider, Legislator John Ferretti, Project Thank A Cop, Miss Wantagh, and Wantagh High School.
Expressing the purpose of the event, Senator Rhoads emphasized the respect and gratitude the community holds for its police force, stating, “This isn’t just about ribbons—it’s about respect, gratitude, and standing shoulder to shoulder with the heroes who keep our communities safe. The Nassau County Police Department has served with honor for 100 years, helping make Nassau the safest county in America.”
Andy Fox, from Project Thank A Cop, echoed this sentiment, noting the project’s role in support of the police and Senator Rhoads’ commitment. Ella Stevens from Miss Wantagh described her organization’s involvement, highlighting the importance of giving back to the community.
In addition to ribbon distribution, the event aimed to bolster gratitude for the ongoing commitment and sacrifices of Nassau County’s law enforcement. Senator Rhoads expressed appreciation for the volunteers and community partners who made the event possible, acknowledging their vital contributions to its success.
